INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY – HISTORY.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY – HISTORY.

While the first observance of a Women’s Day was held on February 28, 1909 in New York, March 8 was suggested by the 1910 International Woman’s Conference to become an “International Women’s Day” After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations. (1)

The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in the International Women’s Year, 1975. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace. (1) (2)

All of this is very well summarized in the #PressForProgress hash tag: Individually, we’re one drop but together we’re an ocean. Commit to a “gender parity mindset” via progressive action. Let’s all collaborate to accelerate gender parity, so our collective action powers equality worldwide. (3)

Please join me in celebrating this historical event in North Bay at Canadore College’s Weaver Auditorium (B200) from 12:30pm to 1:50PM on March 8, 2018, in honour of International Women’s Day.
